Letter from Tom L. Popejoy thanking Robert Wetheril,l son of Marietta Wetherill. Popejoy was the president of the University of New Mexico. The heirs of Marietta Wetherill gave the university Marietta's vast collection of ancient artifacts and other Native American items. Marietta Wetherill's husband Richard Wetherill was an explorer of the Four Corners area. He discovered the several ruins of the Mesa Verde, The Basket Makers in Cave 7 in Utah, The ruins of Keet Seel in Arizona and was the first to head up excavations of ruins in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. The excavations were guided by Dr. Pepper of the University of Pennsylvania. He also discovered hundreds of other non descript ruins in the Four Corners area. He was killed in 1910 by an angry customer of his trading post.
