Montezuma Castle

Richard Wetherill visited here with the Marietta Palmer family in 1895-96. After many others had removed most artifacts. Richard's excavations revealed several mummies on several levels of the ruin. Richard knew where to look.
Montezuma Castle was inhabitited by the Sinaqua indians about 700 years ago.  Built 100 feet above Beaver Creek it provided an excellent defensive location.
